Cal Women's Basketball: Mikayla Cowling (2014) Commits to Cal and Oderah Chidom (2013) Gets Cal Offer

Golden Bear Lair is proud to announce that we will start covering Cal Women’s Basketball much more extensively from now on. We plan to have exclusive info (that no one else has), previews, recaps, analysis, interviews, and much more for Cal WBB.

To start our new coverage we bring some breaking news as well as exclusive info.

First off, the breaking news is that 2014 prospect Mikayla Cowling has committed to Cal. More details from ESPN Hoopgurlz:

Mikayla Cowling, the 6-foot-1 wing from Benicia, Calif., has committed to Cal, according to her East Bay Xplosion club team coach, Mark Anger. The four-star rising sophomore also considered LSU, UCLA, USC and Loyola Marymount, where her older sister Alex plays.

“She is going to be a great player,” Anger said. “She’s a great athlete and continues to get better. She had a great summer.”

Cowling, who is on the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100 Watch List, is the first prospect to commit to the Golden Bears under new head coach Lindsay Gottlieb.

This is a great pickup by Coach Gottlieb and company. It’s good to see Cal Women’s Basketball get the great recruits they deserve. Mikayla has three years before she actually becomes a Bear, which is a long period of time where she still will be getting more offers from other schools, but it’s amazing to see how much hard work the coaching staff has put in. The coaches had to have been pro-active to go out there and have a 2014 recruit commit so this is a testament to their tireless effort.

It’s definitely a new era for Cal Women’s Basketball with a lot of excitement and anticipation. This good news is just the starting for a program that will accomplish many great things.

As for the exclusive info….

Golden Bear Lair was able to get some great information about Cal Women’s Basketball from a source (more to come in future updates).

Oderah Chidom from Bishop O’Dowd was on campus today. She really impressed the coaches and Cal has decided to offer. Oderah is a 2013 recruit measuring at 6’3″ and she is one of the best post players in the country.  ESPN WBB Recruiting has her Position Rank at 12, a 92 Scout’s Grade, and 4 stars. Some analysis from ESPN:

Long post, runs the floor well. Will get out on the break and run from rim to rim to score a layup. Good athlete. Playing hard on both ends. Trying to block shots.

Her length and athleticism have always been impressive and her ability to get out in transition from the post position continued to stand out. The best part of her performance this weekend was a more focused effort on being a force in the halfcourt offense. Her back to the basket game now has some strong counter moves and she’s playing with contact on a more regular basis.

One last quote that makes me feel as if Cal offered the right player:

Chidom is booming with potential. As she gets stronger and/or learns out to use her length to protect the ball and finish more consistently her stock is going to skyrocket.

Oderah has been making some noise for a while now. As for her most recent accomplishement, Chidom lead Bishop O’Dowd to the 2011 NorCal Division III Girls Basketball Championship. She finished the game with a game high 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks
