Lacking Cal Offer, Chris Harper Commits to SMU

Chris Harper told me today that he has committed to SMU on his official visit there. Harper goes to Crespi High School and is out of Encino, California. Besides SMU, he has offers from Cal Poly, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Montana, UC Davis, and UTEP. Chris Harper is a Wide Receiver and is 6’0″ and  165 lbs. He is rated as a 3 star, 77/100 on ESPN, 3 Star on Rivals, and a 3 Star on Scout.

Harper has wanted a Cal offer for a long time now and met with Cal coaches this week at Crespi.  Chris wasn’t happy with what the coaches told him at the visit.

“I would have gone to Cal but the coaches weren’t being honest and straightup with me. I felt like I wasn’t a priority so I just committed (to SMU)” Chris Harper said.

This confirms the rumors that indeed Cal coaches put Harper on the “second tier” of recruits, which means he apparently was a reserve if a WR that had a Cal offer already committed somewhere else. It’s common for there to be tiers, but when a school does this, they run the risk of having a recruit choose elsewhere because he is tired of waiting.

Chris made a decision because at some point, there has to be a question of how long a person can be held hostage by one offer. It’s not like he hasn’t been checking out other schools (as noted by SMU visit), but lately all he has talked about is Cal, which makes this sort of disappointing  to Cal fans who have been pulling for him to get an offer.

Though we didn’t discuss this, there is still a possibility that Cal could offer Chris Harper which might change the dynamic of things. Otherwise, this means that Cal can’t miss on the WR recruits they have offered because Chris won’t be the reserve for them as of now.
