Cal Victorious over So-Cal foes Cal Poly

Recap: In non-league action yesterday (12/18) the Cal Bears defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs 51-41. Cal Poly came into Haas Pavilion in the midst of a five game road trip that hasn’t started out well for them. Cal just came off a tough loss to Southern Miss last Sunday and came out firing against The Mustangs yesterday. The Bears took a 19-12 lead into halftime, holding Cal Poly at 15% shooting and after halftime is when the action picked up. With just over three minutes left in regulation The Mustangs tied the game at 39. This is where Cal picked up their play and closed out the game on a 12-2 run marked by a key Jorge Gutierrez three-pointer with 1:09 left.

Markhuri Sanders-Frison scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Gutierrez had 10 points, and Harper Kamp had 9 Points and 8 Rebounds for Cal. The leading scorer for the Mustangs was guard Shawn Lewis with 16 points.

The win was also the 599th of Coach Mike Montgomery’s career which now ranks him sixth most among active Division I coaches.

Cal is now 6-4 on the season and face a tough matchup on Wednesday 12/22 against #3 ranked Kansas at Haas Pavilion.
