The Cal Golden Bears lost a tough fought game this weekend against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Bears won’t be in action this weekend, but we’ve got all your news and links about the loss and the upcoming bye week here:

Our rivals over at SB Nation’s California Golden Blogs has an interesting piece about coach Sonny Dykes’ response to the question regarding Cal’s inept defense this season.

SF Gate’s primary Cal beat writer Hunter Hewitt wrote this article, where he kind of makes it seem as if Kenny Guiton had this amazing game against Cal this weekend. I will reiterate, Cal lost, but Ohio State (after the first six minutes of play) really looked beatable. Cal’s inexperience, rash of injuries and tough breaks really made the game look like more of a blow out than it was. By the way, if you’re the fourth ranked team in the nation, as Ohio State is, you should allow a freshman quarterback to hang 34 points on your defense. You also shouldn’t let a team that should have lost to FCS mid-tier Portland State out play you for chunks of the game. Sorry, that’s fact.

Also, SF Gate featured this gem by Al Saracevic. Genius writing. No sarcasm.

The Contra Costa Times Jeff Faraudo let me know that Jared Goff won the Pac-12 freshman of the week award. Monte Poole says Cal must fix their defense, Faraudo said something similar. Not to toot my own horn, but I said that a week ago.

A couple of news and notes around the Pac-12:

A great week for the Pac-12. Oregon proves they have a faster team than Tennessee does. Can we get a mercy rule in Oregon games going forward? Starting in week 5, when the Ducks rip the Golden Bears?…UCLA is the real deal. That second half in Nebraska this weekend must prove that to any doubter…PS Nebraska’s tribute to Nick Pasquale was first class…Oh yeah, USC won a game against a bad team and celebrated on twitter. Yay! I guess.
